Dover (DE) Chapter of Links, Incorporated

Our Chapter History

The Dover (DE) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated began with a group of highly motivated women: Mrs. Gertrude W. Jackson, Mrs. Virginia L. Carson, and Mrs. Helen Walker. A chapter was not formed at that time because of a moratorium on additional chapters in the Delaware area. The moratorium had been declared by the Chapter Establishment Committee of the Links, Incorporated.

Five years later, October 1984, Mrs. Virginia L. Carson reconvened an enthusiastic group of women to organize an interest group of The Links, Incorporated. It was at this meeting of 28 women that the name of “Cliffs of Dover” was adopted as a variation of the “English White Cliffs of Dover.” The women who formed this club represented a unique bank of talent in educational and professional experiences. Ms. Martha Woodfolk was elected president. The ladies had a strong commitment to serve and moved toward bigger and better service to the elderly, to the youth, to the poor, and to the physically challenged in the Dover community.

After a year as “Cliffs,” the members applied for chapter status. Their application to the National Office of The Links, Incorporated was accepted, and the Dover (DE) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated was chartered in April 1986, with Mrs. Virginia L. Carson as the Organizer.

The presidents of the chapter have been:  Mrs. Winifred C. Harris, Mrs. Nettye H. Evans, Mrs. Alice Carson Tisdale, Dr. Mary G. Wyche, Mrs. Gertrude Jackson, Dr. Mary F. Jones, Dr. Merriel Bullock, Dr. Vivian L. Griffin, Mrs. Barbara S. O'Neal, Mrs. Blanche L. Jackson and Dr. Wilma A. Mishoe as the immediate past president. The current, two-time serving, president is Mrs. Blanche L. Jackson.

The Dover (DE) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated sponsors or participates in several programs throughout the Dover community.
